Noises in the Dark

You know that feeling you get when you’re in a strange house in the dark? Maybe you’re sleeping over at a friend’s house for the first time. Maybe you’re on vacation in a strange place. Or maybe you’re exploring when tragedy strikes and all of a sudden, you’re left in the dark.

You hear a noise that sounds oddly like someone breathing. Or maybe it’s the wind.

Then you hear a creak. Was that the walls settling, or was that the foot fall of someone else who is moving around in the dark, silently creeping closer.

There is a sudden scuttle near the corner. Was that a mouse? Or was it someone scraping their fingers slowly across the wood, searching for something.

Maybe searching for you.

Every noise you hear could be sinister or benign. And you never know what might be waiting around the next corner...

Scary right? When I heard some of the early sound designs this week, I was FREAKED OUT. Our sound artist has been hard at work, making the bumps in the night that will keep you, the player, on the edge of your seat. But he’s a little stuck on ideas. So let’s try for a little audience participation! I want you to think of the scariest noises to hear in a dark and unfamiliar place, and email them to me at kerili@live.com. I’ll pass the ideas on to our creative director and sound designer, and you could be part of our game development! Cool right?
